While it is possible to get your application fee waived, it’s not the easiest thing in the world to do. Most schools use this fee in order to pay costs it takes to go through all of the applications and choose which students they want to attend. If they waive many of the application fees, they will have to figure out how to pay these costs with money they have on hand, which would inevitably lead to higher tuition costs.

Some colleges will waive the application fee for a specific occasion, like Enrollment Night or something of that nature. During these special events student hopefuls are invited to visit the campus and apply without having to pay the application fee. Ask the college of your choice if they plan to host one of these events in the near future and be sure to make it there on that day. Although if you live far from this university it might be cheaper just to pay the fee rather than commute back and forth to campus.

They typically can’t selectively waive an application fee for one person, and not another without valid, documented reasons. You can request them to waive your application fee simply because you can’t afford to pay it, and they will verify that your family’s household income justifies your claim. School’s don’t want to overlook promising students just because they’re scared off by the application fee. Also, because most students apply to more than one college, the costs of applying can add up quickly.

You may also qualify for admission fee waivers by taking the SAT. There are lists of schools out there that will honor these waivers and allow you to apply free of charge. It’s always a good idea to double-check with your school counselor if there are other ways you can avoid the application fees. They will usually have a few tricks up their sleeves and have likely heard the request before.

Whatever you do, don’t let the cost of applying hold you back from the college of your choice. Also, don’t only apply to one or two because you’re worried about the cost. You should have a good number of schools to choose from, and it’s possible that you won’t be accepted to every school you apply to. Since it’s a numbers game you have to keep applying until you’re happy with one of the acceptance letters. If you can’t find a way to have the fees waived, be creative and find ways to earn the money to cover the fees. It’s always a better idea to learn how to make money than to hope for someone to waive fees or give you a handout.

Many students are asking themselves should I go to college? And with the economic crisis underway they’re wondering should I go to college in this economy?

How do I become a paramedic in the UK? There are 2 options for gaining your full qualification and registration with the HPC as a paramedic. You can become a student paramedic at a university offering a suitable paramedic degree course or you can train with one of the UK’s ambulance trusts.

The best way of becoming a paramedic in the UK depends upon your circumstances. Training with an NHS Ambulance Trust is the preferred method for many as you are in paid employment whilst training. Student paramedic vacancies however are rare and extremely competitive, often attracting more than 100 applicants per place.

To apply for paramedic training with an NHS trust, check the NHS jobs website regularly as all such vacancies must be advertised on their site by regulation. You simply apply directly for one of these trainee vacancies. These are the Ambulance Trusts in the UK that offer Paramedic Training positions: East Midlands, East of England, Great Western, London, North East, North West, South Central, South East Coast, South Western, West Midlands & Yorkshire.

Training at university to become a paramedic provides you with a full degree and certified qualification but you are essentially training in your own time and at your own expense. In order to get a place on a paramedic degree course you must apply through the UCAS system which handles all applications to higher education in the UK. Although many paramedic students qualify for grants you are not paid during your 2, 3 or 4 years at university.

Having said that, if you become a paramedic student on a sandwich course you may be paid for your middle year. This middle year work placement is part of becoming a paramedic in the UK but not all degree courses are delivered in this way. Some incorporate block placements throughout the course instead of a sandwich year. Certain ambulance trusts also offer paid shift work to students outside of their timetabled training sessions.

The universities currently offering Paramedic Degree courses are, Bournemouth, Brighton, Bristol, Canterbury, Cornwall, Coventry, Greenwhich, Hatfield, Lancashire, Liverpool, Manchester, Northampton, Oxford Brookes, Portsmouth, Sheffield, St. Georges (London), Staffordshire, Surrey, & Worcester

When applying to become a paramedic, whether via university as a student paramedic or an ambulance trust as a trainee paramedic, the requirements are broadly the same. You will need a sound level of education including the following:

GCSEs at level C or above in Maths, English and at least 3 other subjects preferably including a science.

A Levels or the equivalent in at least 2 subjects, again preferably one being a science.

Mature potential applicants often look into how to become a paramedic and may be considered to become paramedics on the basis of experience as well as alternative qualifications that demonstrate the ability to work at the appropriate academic level. For example, Open University credits are often viewed as acceptable alternatives. Any academic qualifications to be considered should be no more than 2 or 3 years old.

Physical fitness is also a requirement to become a paramedic and will be tested both by universities and ambulance trusts before offering a place. Any prospective student paramedic should be able to carry a 20Kg pack with relative ease over a reasonable distance including up and down stairs at a brisk trot. This is often tested by continual stepping on and off a step platform over a 5 minute test period.

Visit our information & training site for advice, insider tips and help getting a place to become a paramedic. You can also follow this paramedic student as he reports his own journey day by day on his Blog

So you are asking yourself the question, why study in Australia? Making the decision to study abroad is not an easy one. You have expended a lot of sweat qualifying for the University of your choice, so choosing an overseas university could be seen as a brave decision.

But, when you think about it, studying abroad is not uncommon. In fact, a large percentage of students end up completing part of their degree at another institution simply to get the benefit of new perspectives and to be stimulated by a new academic environment.

For example, how many students dream of attending Oxford or Cambridge? These venerable seats of learning will always attract students from overseas simply for the kudos they transmit to your qualification.

But studying at an overseas university can involve much more than completing a qualification. Let’s take a look at some of the reasons to complete at least part of your degree in an Australian university.

* Australian universities have established an enviable reputation as centres of excellence in learning. This excellence has been driven by the development of innovative and creative courses which can set you up for international success.
* Lecturers and teachers at most Australian universities have completed qualifications at institutions around the world. This means you can benefit from the quality of course content that comes with extended learning and teaching practices. Most lecturers are internationally recognised and highly sought after so you can be sure of high-quality content delivery.
* Whilst the hubbub of and history of Europe might be attractive to some, Australia offers a unique lifestyle that is extremely well suited to tertiary study. The Australian education system is recognised internationally for innovative policy developments and these days, many Asian students choose Australian universities because of this.
* The Australian lifestyle offers something unique to every visitor. Life outside the university is as important as any other consideration, so don’t forget to check out the lifestyle options available to you at your chosen Australian university. Semester breaks can include extended surfing holidays, or spending time with new-found friends travelling into the outback to experience unique aboriginal culture and the drama of country life.
* The Australian government actively encourages overseas students to attend Australian universities by offering special Visa conditions. If you are thinking of settling in Australia after you complete your qualification you are advised to consult a migration expert to make sure your qualification allows you to work in an area approved by the Australian government. Doing so will make it easier for you to satisfy immigration requirements.

Australia has so much to offer when it comes to lifestyle and job satisfaction. With the rapidly growing population there are plenty of opportunities to study at a growing number of tertiary institutions around the country.

When you choose to study in Australia, you have a unique opportunity to combine an enviable lifestyle in a friendly climate with a high quality education that will make your job seeking efforts all that much easier.

By the way, do you want to learn more about college/university? If so, I suggest you check Study in Australia and Australian Universities.

Dissertation processes break down when students cannot find, or have poorly organized their reading. Lack of beginning organization will result in loss of time throughout the dissertation process, and time is your most precious commodity throughout graduate school. This article covers the beginning organization of dissertation reading and writing, while focusing on the frequently asked question: “Why should I use reference software?” While EndNote is the software that I use, and therefore know most intimately, any software might work as long as it allows you to do these three things: first, helping you capture and organize your notes, second, allowing you to cite and build a reference list while you write, and third, allowing you to change reference styles easily. All three attributes to good reference software along with brief notes as to how they will help you in your dissertation process, are discussed in this article.

Capturing and Organizing Notes

Beginning doctoral students rarely understand the importance of capturing every little part of their thoughts in a database from the time they begin. The notes you take now,on the ideas you have as you read will become invaluable later. If you don’t start a reference library at the beginning of your process, at some point you will have to back up and capture ideas you have lost. As a secondary student I was brought up in the times when people kept notes on notecards. We were trained to put down the complete reference, and then capture each idea that we found interesting and might use for our writing in the future. That same idea holds today in reference software such as EndNote. You are doing more than capturing that reference and what you read, you are capturing your ideas about it.

Because you’re using a database you will have fields, some of which you may need and some of which you may not need for each particular type of reference. Be sure to fill in each necessary field every time you pick up and read an article you find worthy of note. This can be done by electronic transfer, depending upon your library, from your library database directly to your EndNote file. You also might consider simply typing in the information needed as oftentimes that is faster than electronic transfer. Never leave a reference without capturing notes about your ideas on the article in the lower database fields. Why did you read this article? What did you find important about it? What ideas do you not want to forget? Make sure that all of these questions are answered before you close out of any documentation on your reading.

Citing and Referencing While You Write

Academic work requires that we acknowledge the other authors whose work we have read and who influenced the ideas about which we are writing. This is not the same as quoting them verbatim. I suggest that you start a habit of writing what you think from your own point of view, and then, at the end of each paragraph, going back to your reference list and acknowledging whose work added to what you have just written. If you are using EndNote, and hopefully for other quality reference software, you will be able to highlight the references of the authors you want to cite and easily bring that group citation into your writing. The reference software should also simultaneously start a reference list and keep it alphabetized for you. This step alone saves you hours and hours of work. When you have one author who wrote several things in the same year, the software will even go back and add the requisite a. or b. after those citations.

There are times your references may change a little. For instance you might discover that you had spelled an author’s name wrong, or you somehow needed to update some of the fields in the reference. Rather than having to go back through each document in which you have ever used that citation, you can know that by simply refreshing the reference list when you open the document again the updates will occur. As your academic writing goes on for years, this will save you more time than you can now imagine.

Changing Reference Styles Easily

Your university requires that you use one particular reference style, and to constantly refer to that particular style manual. Your reference software does much of that work for you by maintaining the updates as those style manuals change over time. Keep in mind that you will not always write under the same style because academic journals use several different styles and you have to make your writing match the needs or guidelines of the publications you write for. Once again EndNote, and hopefully other reference software, will allow you to change the style, and then update the document, to reflect that change.

There are other specific reasons once you start writing doctoral dissertation that you will want to have all of the things you have read captured in reference software. As an example, a complete database will allow you to easily sort your reading into topics for your lit review and write each topic area under your own voice. The ways in which you can use reference software during the dissertation or thesis writing process are covered in other articles. Meanwhile, in summary, a beginning doctoral student will save themselves many hours of time by starting early to use reference software to capture and organize their notes, cite and reference what they read while they write, and allow them to change reference styles easily.

There are other resources the doctoral student will find helpful in starting this process. General dissertation headings and a video that explains the logic of the three chapter proposal have also proven helpful an can be found at: http://www.doctoralnet.com/ E. Alana James, Ed.D. works as a consultant for a number of universities mentoring doctoral students through to completion. Her Doctoral Net site puts these resources on the web and allow you to have the help you need to finish your dissertation more efficiently. Dr. James works with doctoral in business and education through a series of free and for a moderate payment services.

Graduating college is important to many people, but it’s not necessarily a good idea to accrue debt. Try to practice ways to pay for your education without taking out loans. Getting in and out of college without debt may be very refreshing and can be quite helpful for your future.Always bear in mind that a college diploma is just a piece of paper. Thus, you should seek education that fits your budget and serves your future plans; the word “plan” is the matter at hand.

1. Having a RESP (Registered Education Savings Plan)

If your parents have set up a RESP account for you, then you should be fine. But if not, remember to set one up for your kids in the future. It saves trouble.

2. Let go of the “dream school”concept.

Dream schools, private schools, special schools, schools where famous people went to… But honestly, there’s no need to be there. There isn’t a requirement that you have to be in those schools. Private or public, special or common, all colleges are colleges. They’re all the same, they teach the same stuff. So don’t go to a school that costs much more money just because you want to feel special, privileged, or stand out. When it’s time to search for jobs, colleges are still colleges. There isn’t a necessary requirement to have gone to this particular school. Save your money, don’t be picky.

3. Working part-time.

Most college students work part-time while in college. It is a good method to partially cover your college fees or to secure additional income although no one can pay-off his debts this way. A part-time job prevents you from preparing your essays to the best possible standard for a job requires commitment but you develop skills required in real life.

4. Seek scholarships.

Scholarships are great ways to pay for that college education without taking out loans or working part-time. Many scholarships don’t require extensive financial information for you to apply; so take advantage of your interests and skills and find and apply for the scholarship opportunities you’re most likely to be awarded.

If you happen to graduate in a business related course and plan to step it up a notch and pursue graduate studies, they have to take GMAT or Graduate Management Admission Test to be able to study masters or even doctorate degrees. Most schools in the United States and Canada require a GMAT score for them to enter in their respective schools aspired. This exam can be difficult that is why many are preparing for it. Thus, GMAT classes or tutorials are offered to help students achieve a high score or at least get the school desired to be admitted in a certain university.

When taking the GMAT, the exam has 3 parts and students should equally pass the 3 topics to be admitted in the targeted university. The three parts are Analytical Quantitative Assessment, Qualitative Section and the Verbal phase. In the first part, the students are asked to write an essay basing on the arguments given. In the analytical quantitative part, it is subdivided into two parts wherein it involves problem solving and knowing if the date is sufficient. The last section, which involves the verbal part, has something to do with grammar, reading comprehension, reasoning and the like. Surely the GMAT exam can be difficult. That is why GMAT classes are administered to help the students.

There are 2 types of GMAT classes available and they can choose from either doing a one-on-one or live classroom classes, and the other is taking online GMAT classes. For the live one, it gives out detailed discussion of what the exam will cover and materials or hand outs will be given. There are also practice tests which will happen for 15 times and a classroom discussion of about 42 hours. What is good about having indoor GMAT classes is that tutors are readily available and they can give help either by phone or email and rest assured these tutors have an average of 750+ GMAT scores. They can also give assistance to those who wants to apply for a university since some centers have connections to business schools. The price of having a classroom setting though can be costly at about $1100 but it is worth it.

On the other hand, attending an online or virtual GMAT class is also beneficial because it saves time and effort in going to review center just to attend the class. Having a virtual class makes you study wherever and whenever you it to be. They will also send out information through email and other tools are used in order to disseminate information for the GMAT test. Taking an online course is much cheaper at $700 and others offer a money back guarantee of they are not in favor of the online teaching styles. If lucky, there are some establishments who offer a free 7-day trial. Teachers are also masters in their field and they give out about 4000 problems to be solved as their problems.

Whatever students prefer, just as long as they understand and the classes give them confidence in achieving a high GMAT score, the type of GMAT classes to be attended depends on the person.

I understand having brand new replacement windows can be very complicated however I highly recommend you try and find out more on GMAT Online before choosing ones. Take a look at this GMAT Test Prep site for additional information.

From 2012 students in England face fees of up to £9000 per year…who will be able to afford them?

I studied in Poland. When I passed my entrance exams for the university (together with my secondary school final exams, which were equivalent to GCSE), I found myself in a comfortable situation: I had a place at one of the best universities in the country and I was still living at home. My parents agreed to support me for the whole period of studies (5 years until I got my Polish M.Sc.) providing I was doing my best.

I do not come from a rich family and I knew I had to finish my university as soon as possible and start working. Even before I entered the university, I had a deal with my parents: if I did not pass entrance exams, I had to look for a job to contribute to living. It was as simple as that. I was provided with food, accommodation and a bus pass. Anything else I had to earn. There was no way I was going to visit pubs or clubs. For one thing: I did not have the money, nor did I have time.

I admit, I did not have to pay any tuition fees (state universities are still free in Poland), but at the same time, I can honestly say, that I was not wasting my tutors’ time: I studied to the best of my ability and was not partying like some students. Lecturers (who I personally know) complain nowadays that many students ignore them during the lecture or occupy themselves by watching pornographic films on laptops. This kind of activity would not be acceptable when I was studying (over a decade ago). We, students or at least the majority of us, had regard for our teachers. We were not saints, but we tried to act and behave within norms. We were punctual and hard-working… Why did standards change?

Some people could call me “boring”, however, I knew I had to finish my studies quickly and stand on my own two feet. Besides, there was this pride getting in the way all the time: I wanted to show that I was able to get through a difficult course and finish it. Was it easy? No, not in the least. I was on the verge of giving up completely a few times, unable to pass some topics and feeling so stupid. But I persevered. From year three I started receiving a scholarship for passing all my exams on time and getting good grades. It was not much money, but when you are a student, every penny counts. I felt so proud and this achievement boosted my confidence. I knew I could do anything.

I finished my university with top marks and without a…debt. Well, I have a personal debt: to my parents for allowing me to study and supporting me even though we did not have much money. I would love to be able to give my children the same chance. Will I be able to do it? They still have quite a few years before they enter universities, but what loans will they have to take to be able to study? How will they repay them?

I know there are thousands of parents facing this dilemma. And it is obvious that they will have to choose between helping their children and sending them to the universities or sending them to work (if they are lucky enough to find it). How many young, bright people will have to give up an idea of being a student because they will not be able to afford to study? I do not support time wasters and party animals, who just study not to work and make life difficult for their lecturers. This kind of students should, in my humble opinion, be warned about consequences and expelled from university immediately. Plus they should have to pay the fees back.

However, genuine, hard-working students do not deserve to be deprived of the opportunity to widen their horizons because of lack of money. We never know, we may be “killing”another Charles Dickens before we see his creation…

Joanna Foss, B.Sc. graduated from Technical University of Lodz in Technical Physics. She used to work at Polish Academy of Sciences, then she decided to run, together with her husband, her own companies while bringing her family. She runs motorhome hire company http://www.estpuk.com, hosting company http://www.fullnappy.com and gives private maths lessons to children. You can read more about her at her own website and follow estpuk on twitter.

Are you a college student trying to figure out what to do with your leftover textbooks? Are they beginning to pileup in your dorm room and you are ready to burn them or throw them out your window? Well, before you go to extremes, let me give you some ideas of what you can do with your books and make a little bit of your money back in the process.

First, sell your books back to your bookstore. Most university bookstores will buy your books back. For some books you will get a good amount back for what you paid for them. For other books you will get a minimal amount, but at least it’s still money. Then there are some books that the bookstore won’t buy back at all and you are stuck with a book you do not want.

Another option is to sell your books online. You can sell them on sites such as Amazon and eBay. You name the price you want to sell them for and wait for a buyer to make a purchase. There is no guarantee on whether your book will sell, but if it is a book that is in demand you will most likely make some money back. When your books do sell you are in charge of shipping them out to the buyer.

There are also websites such as Cash 4 Books and We Buy Your Books that will buy your books from you and pay for them to be shipped to them. You put in the ISBN number for your book and they will tell you how much they will pay you for your book. Not all of your books will be accepted by them, but some of yours will and it’s worth a try to find out which ones will. Once you determine which books they will buy you can print off a prepaid shipping label and get rid of those books.

These are a few options for you to follow to get some money back on those used textbooks. Try each one and sell as many of your books as possible. If you have any that no one will buy than you can donate them to the bookstore, drop them off to a local thrift store or use them as kindling for fire. It’s all up to you, but make sure you make some extra money from all of those old books.

Once you have gathered all of your old books and are ready to sell them check out Cash 4 Books. You can find them on our website. Check them out and make some extra cash quick.

Sincerely,

When students enroll in a college or university, they usually have no intention of transferring to another school until they have completed their degree; however, transferring colleges is a very common occurrence in our highly mobile society. There are many reasons that students change schools – marriage, job opportunities, military duty, family problems, illness, or perhaps the college or university just turns out to be the wrong fit for them.

Many times students have already spent countless time and money taking classes term after term and have earned many credit hours in various disciplines. Ideally, students should spend the first two years taking mostly general studies classes–or classes that will usually apply toward any degree. Courses that fall into this category are English composition, literature, general biology, general chemistry, general physics, fine arts (music, art, or theatre appreciation), freshman or sophomore history (American, western civilization, or world), general psychology, general sociology, pre-calculus algebra or calculus, philosophy, etc. Classes that fall into the general studies category are usually 1000 or 2000 (100 or 200) level classes which means they are categorized as freshman or sophomore level courses. Some colleges/universities may use other numerical designations for freshman or sophomore level classes.

If the time to transfer comes at a point where major-specific courses have been taken, students should take several steps to ensure that their courses are given the proper equivalencies to courses at the new institution. If a student plans to pursue the same major at the new university as he/she was pursuing at the old school, transferring credits for applicability to his degree will not be as difficult; however, if a totally new major is chosen, most of the major specific classes already completed will most likely apply only as free electives at the new school. Some degree requirements include some free electives so all may not be lost.

Before leaving the old university, students should make sure to:

1. Secure a copy of the college catalog under which he/she entered this university. Course descriptions from this catalog will give a true description of each course offered at that time. College catalogs may be accessed online also, but having a hard copy is always a good idea.
2. Keep the textbooks and syllabi for the courses that they think may be in question.
3. Request an official copy of their college transcript to be sent to the transferring college. Be sure to give a correct, complete address to the transcript clerk so that the transcript will go to the correct department. The college transcript will be the official document from which all your transferring coursework will be taken.
4. Request an unofficial copy of your transcript or print one online to use when meeting with the new college officials during admission processing or major and/or course selection and discussion.

Once students are admitted to the new college or university, they should:

1. Request an official evaluation of transfer credits from their previous college.
2. After all classes have been evaluated for applicability to the chosen degree plan, students should secure a copy of their degree plan showing how all evaluated classes are being used toward the degree.
3. If a student believes he has taken an equivalent class at his/her old school, but is not getting credit for it at the new school, he/she should first consult the department where the courses are evaluated. If an equivalency cannot be determined there, he/she should meet with a departmental chairperson for his/her review. If this person deems the class to be equivalent to one of the needed courses in the degree plan, he/she will contact the evaluation department and inform them of his decision. Most likely, this determination will be submitted on a formal document. The evaluators will need course descriptions, syllabi, and textbooks to make the most informed decision.
4. If it is determined that the class has no equivalent course at the new college, a student may ask the department chairperson or dean of that particular college or school if he/she would be willing to substitute that course for another course required in the degree. If this is approved, appropriate paperwork would have to be submitted for application to the degree plan.
5. Should a student be fortunate enough to get unused coursework approved in the degree plan, he/she should make sure to follow up on the process to make sure that the approval paperwork has gone to the correct source and that the coursework is applying as promised.

After all the evaluations are completed and everything has been done to make sure that as much transferred coursework as possible is applying toward their degree plan, students should dedicate themselves to completing their degree at this latest university/college. Moving from one school to another is counter productive, and more often than not, a great deal of time and money are lost.
